History
Montclair's oldest road, Thornhill, started life as a 19th-century logging road built by Hiram Thorn to haul redwood logs down to Oakland. The Sacramento Northern Railroad once ran through the area in the early 1900s, and the neighborhood grew quickly in the first half of the century as roads, schools, and a fire station went in. Once the logging stopped, new redwood growth was protected in the surrounding parks, and Montclair settled into the affluent, wooded character it's kept ever since.

At the center of the neighborhood is Montclair Village, a walkable commercial district built around a storybook firehouse and a Tudor-style library.
