What You Write Out Comes To Light

When the Catalog Finds You

I returned home from South Africa with more than photographs, souvenirs, and unforgettable memories.

I came home with greater clarity.

There’s something about stepping away from your everyday routine that allows you to hear your own thoughts more clearly. On the flight home, somewhere between continents, I opened my journal and began writing down new goals.

One sentence stood out:

Teach a course at the Piedmont Adult School.

I had no plan.

I didn’t know who to contact. I hadn’t researched the application process. I simply knew it felt like the next right step.

When I walked into my kitchen after returning home, there on the counter sat the latest Piedmont Adult School catalog.

I’ve lived in Piedmont for years, and I honestly can’t remember ever seeing one arrive at my house before.

I laughed.

It felt as if life was saying, “You asked…now begin.”

Was it coincidence?

Perhaps.

But I’ve lived long enough to recognize a pattern.

I’ve seen it when I decided to become a Realtor more than three decades ago. I saw it when I signed up for my first marathon without knowing whether I could finish. I saw it when I committed to writing a book before every chapter had been written. I saw it when I accepted the invitation to deliver a TEDx talk in South Africa on my birthday, trusting that the message would come together because it mattered.

The details rarely appear first.

The decision does.

Clarity Changes What We Notice

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that clarity changes what we notice.

The opportunities may have always been there, but once we decide what matters, our attention shifts. We notice the conversation that opens a door. We receive the introduction we didn’t know we needed. We recognize the article, the book, the person — or even the catalog — that was invisible just days before.

I don’t believe this is magic.

I believe it’s momentum.

Our minds are remarkable. Once we give them a meaningful destination, they begin searching for pathways we couldn’t previously see.

That’s why the first step in my Mindset In Motion™ framework isn’t having the perfect plan.

It’s having the courage to choose a direction.

Motion begins long before movement.

It begins with a decision.

The Next Step Is Often the Only Step You Need

South Africa reminded me that every new chapter starts with a single thought, written in a journal, followed by the willingness to take the very next step.

This week, my next step is simple.

I’m going to open that catalog.

I’m going to make the call.

And I’m going to see where this new path leads.

Because I’ve learned that extraordinary things rarely begin with certainty.

They begin with curiosity, intention, and the courage to act before every answer is known.

So let me leave you with this question:

What goal have you been quietly carrying that deserves to be written down today?

You don’t need to know every step.

Just decide on the first one.

The rest has an amazing way of revealing itself.

A Life Built on Intentional Yeses

I also see a deeper thread that runs through almost everything I’ve experienced over the past year:

My life has become a series of intentional “yeses.”

  • I said yes to writing Mindset In Motion™ before knowing it would become an Amazon bestseller.
  • I said yes to TEDx before standing on that stage in South Africa.
  • I said yes to running seven marathons across seven continents.
  • I said yes to reinventing my podcast beyond real estate.
  • Now I’m saying yes to teaching.

That isn’t luck.

It’s a philosophy.

You don’t wait for confidence.

You create confidence by moving.

Meet Ezethu

Meet Ezethu, 25 years young.

Ezethu stood on the same stage as me and all the rest of the TEDx speakers. I am in awe of this young woman.

She is also a mathematician.

Another extraordinary connection. Another reminder of what can happen when we say yes, step into new rooms, meet new people, and remain open to where the journey may lead.

Motion begins long before movement. It begins with a decision.
